The Panthers’ last girls softball game was a home game against Chadwick where the team dominated and came away with a 22-2 win, giving them a strong potential to compete in CIF playoffs. This season the softball team continues with a strong win percentage of 59 percent overall, the overall record currently being 11-7 and 4-5 in league, faring much better than the team has for the previous 6 years.
The varsity girls softball team consists of 13 hard-working players, each with a strong work ethic that are multi-talented in a variety of ways. They are all dedicated to the sport and at times are even able to play different positions, showing their willingness to contribute and step up for the team.
Bouncing back from last year’s rocky season, this year the roster is filled with a strong core group of returning sophomores, along with two club freshmen players, providing new perspectives to the game, and two juniors with enough experience to mentor the younger athletes. When talking about players, freshman Brynn Connolly said, “I thank Amelia and Ellery because without our amazing pitchers, we would be nothing.” Amelia Shih, a freshman and left-handed pitcher, has performed well with a 0.345 batting average and 2.72 ERA.
The teammates also note the team spirit and bonds formed on the diamond field. Many enjoy spending time with their teammates and being supportive throughout the sport especially on the field, in the batter’s box, on the bus rides during away games, and in pre-season practices to bond and learn new plays. Shih notes, “I attribute my success to my teammates. Their support and spirit definitely motivates me.”
Sophomore Olivia Asper de Tyson said, “I really love my team, especially Amelia, Lyla, Carthan, Brynn, and Ellery. They keep me locked in and do their best to get me out of my head and have fun.” The focus of the team is noteworthy, as they have actively worked to improve their past three season win percentages of 31, 7, and 0. The girls diligently work together on communicating over issues and miscommunication that impact their losses; they are able to bounce back. An example of this was after their 4-7 loss against Rio Hondo Preparatory School that they followed up with an 18-1 win against Chadwick School.
Their continuous improvement and focus on the game showcases the players’ passion. Their future looks bright, and they can expect to soon embark on a CIF run.
