Marked by unwavering dedication and tenacity, this year’s season for the Poly varsity boys volleyball team has embraced tremendous growth on the court. The squad, fueled by strong team chemistry and notable athletic ability, have had a recent wave of success. After facing early challenges with an overall 8-9 record and 5-3 record in the Prep League, the Panthers have started to come together as a fortified force, showing steady improvement as they position themselves into a spot for the postseason.
On Saturday, April 18th, the team secured a victory of 2-1 against Laguna Beach High School for their final match of the season. While they encountered some obstacles near the beginning of the game, their ability to remain focused, hone in on communication and put full effort into each point ultimately paid off. Junior opposite hitter, outside hitter and setter Hudson Jenq noted, “We lost the first set, but we came together and focused on our passing and were able to etch out a win.” Ending the official season on a high note, the Panthers can now prepare for a promising CIF postseason.
One of the defining characteristics of this year’s team has been the genuine connection between players that has translated into an energized style of play on the court. Head Coach Jack Prater reflected, “Because they’re so familiar with each other, they’re almost like family.”
Additionally, the team’s physical endurance and strength, combined with their growing chemistry, have created a balanced approach that continues to improve as the season goes on. “Another strength is probably our athletic ability. Overall, with our athleticism and team connection, we are a very strong team overall,” shared sophomore middle blocker Alex Pamon. This blend of talent and teamwork has allowed the Panthers to adapt quickly, learning from early mistakes and building momentum with each game they play.
Despite their current progress, the season did not begin smoothly for the team. The Panthers struggled early on, in part due to the absence of last year’s MVP, senior setter Jack Gomez. Without one of their central leaders, the team faced an uphill battle as they worked to adjust their lineup and maintain competitiveness against strong opponents.
However, the return of Gomez marked a significant turning point in the season. After four game losses in a row, the team displayed resilience on the court with four consecutive Prep League victories. His presence not only strengthened the team’s performance on the court but also helped unify the group and restore confidence. As the Panthers continue to regain their footing, they are showing signs of a team that is capable of making a strong late-season push.
Prater noted, “He’s an established player, and he’s got a lot of experience and expertise. He’s a natural leader on the court, so anytime you bring a piece like that back into an organization, things just start to click better.”
Looking ahead, the team remains focused on achieving ambitious goals that reflect both their determination and belief in their potential. With improved chemistry, key players back in the lineup and a growing sense of momentum, the Panthers are determined to turn their early struggles into a successful and memorable season.
