Every great soccer team needs a playmaker, someone who controls the game’s tempo, links defense to offense and never stops running. For Poly girls varsity soccer, that player is freshman Charlotte Newhall. As a midfielder, she’s one of the anchors of the team, orchestrating plays and setting the pace of the game from the center of the pitch. Whether she’s placing perfect passes, outworking her opponents, or stepping up in high-pressure situations, Newhall is a force that keeps Poly’s game flowing.
Newhall, inspired by her older sister, began to play soccer by herself on the sidelines during her sister’s games, quickly growing a passion for the sport. Her parents nurtured her newfound interest by enrolling her in the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) when she was four years old. Since then, soccer has been more than a game for her; it has been a huge part of her life. Her years of hard work and dedication have shaped her into the player that she is today.
Newhall’s impact on the team goes beyond just her technical skills. She is a constant source of motivation for her teammates, pushing them to work hard and stay focused. Sophomore teammate Anara Williams said, “Charlotte is very dedicated, consistently delivering great performances in every match. Her hard work and teamwork led to our success this season while she was always there to encourage and support us.”
Newhall’s teammates also recognize her ability to control the game and bring out the best in those around her. Sophomore Lilah McConnell said, “She was a great addition to our team, and she always helps to connect plays and advance the team’s position during games. She is a very hardworking and positive player with many skills, and I loved seeing the success she helped create for our team.”
Newhall’s position on the field is crucial as she is the link between defense and attack, ensuring a smooth transition during the game. Her awareness on the field allows the team to maintain possession and dictate the flow of the game.
Newhall’s presence in the midfield aided the Panthers to an 8-4-1 record with a 5-3 record in league play this season. One of her standout performances came in Poly’s dominant 4-0 victory over Providence High School, where she controlled the midfield, dictated possession, and played a key role in the team’s offensive success.
With a promising high school career ahead of her, Newhall is determined to continue honing her skills while becoming an even greater leader for the team.
“For the rest of high school, I hope to make it far in CIF with the Poly team,” Newhall shared.
Bidding farewell to four seniors, the Panthers are in good hands with underclassmen such as Newhall on the field as they build for the future.
