There’s a split second before the ball leaves your fingertips when everything feels still. As the ball sails through the net with a rhythmic swish, a rush of satisfaction pulses through your veins, creating a pure yet sharp sensation amid the game’s constant hustle. For freshman Devan Truong, nothing beats this feeling.
“Devan has done a great job. He plays guard, which means he’s a primary ball handler and passer, and he does a very good job on defense,” said Bradford Hall, Poly’s boys varsity basketball head coach.
Introduced to basketball during his early years of elementary school, Truong began his athletic journey with the encouragement of his father. His versatility as a point guard is yet another testament to his commitment to the game.
Averaging eight points per game, there is no doubt he possesses talent well beyond his years. As a key addition to Poly’s boys varsity basketball team, his dedication and innate grasp of the sport distinguish him from the rest.
“He’s very good at diving at the basket. He’s a good shooter and is getting better. He has the capability of being a good defender,” said Hall.
Playing point guard requires strong ball-handling skills and keen discernment as it demands awareness of every player’s position to execute the best play. While their primary responsibility is running the offense, point guards must also be solid defenders. Typically, point guards are tasked with guarding the opposing team’s primary ball-handler. This means Truong must be quick, have good lateral movement and be able to disrupt passes and plays.
Truong’s early triumph extends beyond his court skills. Whether on campus or during games, Truong’s infectious personality is never left unnoticed. The beaming radiance emanating from his presence fosters a spirit of genuine camaraderie, evident in the bonds he has built during the season.
Senior Jack Lentz noted, “Devan always has a smile on his face. Everybody on the team likes to be around him because he is funny and engaging. He consistently brings great energy to practice and games.”
Fueled by a thirst for victory, Truong hopes to win a CIF championship in the years to come.
“As Devan gets stronger, that will make him a better basketball player. He has a good feel for basketball, and he’s good at offense and defense. So far, he seems willing to work hard to achieve his goals,” said Hall.
Shooting into the baskets of success, there is no limit to Truong’s athletic future as he embraces a determination and positivity that will certainly take him far.
