Despite missing many key players early in the season, the boys soccer team has found their stride, winning five of their last six games. With an overall record of 9-3-1 (4-0 in league), the defending Prep League Champions are hitting their stride at the perfect time.
In their league opener against EF Academy, the Panthers dominated with an 11-0 victory as five players were able to find the back of the net. Looking ahead, they will face league rivals Rio Hondo Prep on Jan. 31, aiming to remain undefeated in the Prep League and defend their title.
Bouncing back from the tragic fires that forced the team to miss practices and games, head coach Dan Sheridan commented, “We had a long break because of the fires, but we have been working hard in training. The coaches have been trying to get guys to buy into the team concept. [On Jan. 28], we had five goals and a lot of good assists. I think we are peaking at the right time.”
With every practice, the team continues to sharpen their skills, leadership and communication. Sophomore defender Ethan Greenberg commented, “I’d say that we have really good on and off-the-field chemistry between most of our starters which helps us move the ball. Some of our players have been playing with each other for years, so it gets easier as we play longer together.”
Along with these strengths, the team is still lacking in certain aspects of the game. “I think we struggle when it comes to spatial awareness. Just as an example, Momo Tonthat and I have been playing with each other for years so I’m pretty familiar with his playstyle. Still, just because of the lack of time this year’s team has had together, some players don’t adapt as well to certain players’ styles of play.” Greenberg shared.
As the season progresses, the Panthers have high expectations. In his last year as a Panther, senior Evan Woo shared his hopes for the remainder of the season: “I hope to win another league championship with this wonderful group of young men. It has been great forming everlasting bonds with my teammates who are more than just teammates—they’re brothers.”
With a talented group of underclassmen contributing at a high level, the future looks bright for Poly boys soccer. After falling short in CIF semifinals last year, the team seeks the coveted title of CIF champions this year. The Panthers are keeping their energy high and continuing to grow, promising a great season and future for Poly in the coming years.
