With every fast break, clutch 3-pointer, and tenacious defensive play, the Poly girls basketball team is proving that they are a force to be reckoned with. Although the Panthers lost their first game of the season, falling 53-51 to Holy Martyrs Armenian on Friday, Nov. 20, they regained control of their season and powered through December with a seven-game winning streak.
Their largest victory came against Azusa High School on Friday, Dec. 6, where they dominated the court with a 74-15 victory. Talent and good work ethic were abundant in this match, giving all players a chance to shine.
Their current 5-0 Prep League record is a testament not only to their hard work but also to the persistence and leadership of the coaching staff. Head Coach Kianna Flannagan has played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Now in her third year on the coaching staff and second year as Head Coach, Flannagan has brought a fresh perspective and new energy to the program, which the players have embraced wholeheartedly.
Senior Alex Lentz reflected on the impact Flannagan has had on the team: “Since Coach K has taken over, we have had a higher level of play.” She added, “It is exciting to be a part of that change.”
Despite a strong season overall, however, the Panthers faced a challenging stretch during winter break, suffering three consecutive losses in as many days. On Thursday, Dec. 26, the team fell to Rancho Buena Vista with a score of 40-56. The following day, they competed hard but came up short against Chaparral High School, ending with a score of 54-45. The toughest loss came on Saturday, Dec. 28, in a nail-biting game against Holy Martyrs Armenian, where Poly narrowly missed a victory for the second time this season, losing by just one point, 34-35.
Sophomore point guard Areni Ohanian has played a crucial role this season, leading the team with experience, skill, and hard work. Her leadership and dedication have inspired teammates to set high standards for themselves, both on and off the court.
Ohanian shared, “Our team’s goal this season is to play together as a team and start a new culture for Poly Girls Basketball. We hope to play our best and advance as far as we can to reach our mutual goal of putting Poly on the map for girls basketball.”
Poly girls basketball has shown resilience and determination this season overcoming setbacks and continuing to push forward. With an 11-5 overall record and strong commitment to teamwork and growth, the team is poised to finish strong and make a deep CIF run. The Panthers are proving that this season is just the beginning of something special.
