Returning from last year’s performance which ended in the second round of the Division VII CIF playoffs, Poly’s softball team is gearing up for a thrilling season. New additions to the team have allowed for a more diverse selection of plays for the Panthers to choose from, contributing to their wins thus far.
“We have almost doubled our numbers from last year and this gives us options— choices to make and be able to change things up when needed,” said head coach Jennifer Bond.
With an overall record of 2-2, the Panthers have dominated opponents like Maranatha High School with a final score of 16-6 and Brentwood School with a 18-2 victory. That said, their losses to larger public schools, Arleta High School (8-18) and Duarte High School (9-15), underscore the need for some improvements. The team’s greatest weakness lies in an overall lack of game-time experience due to an influx of new players this year.
“Because we have many new faces on the softball team, some of our weaknesses lie in the execution of the game,” said junior Eila Chan who plays infield. “Many girls are new to the game but work diligently to improve.”
Nevertheless, the freshmen players have shown some raw talent. Chan recognized freshman Kate Asperger as a vital member of the team: “She is a key contributor on offense and defense because she is a very experienced player. Beyond her athletic prowess, her energy on the field is contagious and helps uplift others while playing.”
Playing with speed and applying pressure have served the Panthers well so far in the season. Bond shared, “We have a lot of very good hitters…[and] a lot of speed on the team to put a lot of pressure on the opposing team.”
“We have been focusing on aggressive base running and hitting to prepare for a strong CIF showing,” added freshman Lorelai Thorell. We know that the other teams will be really tough to beat, so we are putting in the work to be better.”
The Poly softball team is entering this season with renewed energy, determination and an increased roster. Despite their challenges, their strengths in speed, hitting, and putting pressure on opponents have positioned them as a formidable team. A growth in numbers from the freshman class has not only filled key gaps from previous seniors but also brought fresh energy and versatility to the lineup. With a strong focus on aggressive play and continuous improvement, the Panthers are poised to build on last year’s success and aim for an even stronger showing in CIF competition.
