Soon, there will be two weeks of no school, classes, homework or tests, and while sitting at home might seem like a good form of relaxation, that can become boring quickly. So, here are five things you can do to get out of the house with friends, family or by yourself. Let’s make these two weeks off of school enjoyable and unforgettable.
1. The Norton Simon Museum: The Norton Simon Museum is located on the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado Blvd, and it is home to thousands of art pieces by famous artists like Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt and Louise Moillon. Tickets are free for students who show their ID and people under 18, which makes it a very accessible place to spend a spring afternoon. The museum is open from 12-5 p.m. every day except Friday and Saturday when it stays open for two extra hours.
2. Local Farmers’ Markets: Support local farmers and get fresh fruits, vegetables, bread and pastries from farmers markets held around the Pasadena area. The Pasadena farmers’ market is held outside Pasadena High School on Saturday mornings and the South Pasadena farmers’ market takes place near the South Pasadena train station on Thursdays from 4-7 pm. Both are great places to shop for ingredients, dinner, snacks or dessert.
3. The Huntington Gardens: The Huntington Gardens is only a short walk away from Poly and provides another fun outdoor experience that includes cafes, museums, libraries and multiple gardens. The Huntington blooms beautifully during the springtime, making it essential to visit this season. Like the Norton Simon, the Huntington also includes many famous pieces of artwork, including Blue Boy and Pinkie.
4. Going on a hike: The Descanso Trail in La Cañada is the perfect afternoon hike as the weather gets warmer. Though the trail is roughly two miles long and the majority is uphill, the lookout point at the top is worth it, showcasing a view of the San Gabriel mountains and some of the Descanso gardens.
5. Old Town Pasadena: While Old Town is already a popular place to go on the weekends or after school, it is also home to various restaurants and stores you may not have visited before. Try going somewhere new with your friends, or someplace you haven’t been in a while. You could channel your inner artist by painting some pottery at Color Me Mine, pick up a latte from Blue Bottle or get some pastries from Tartine — the possibilities for fun and food are endless.
Whether you have already planned your spring break or not, hopefully you’ve found your next weekend plan or activity to relax and excite you and your friends for spring!
