Known for its stunning landscapes and diverse culture, Altadena, California has been a vibrant community brimming with artistic energy for over a century.
Altadena’s history as an arts hub dates back to the early 20th century when, attracted by its scenic environment and proximity to Los Angeles, artists began to flock to the area.
In recent decades, Altadena’s artists have been involved in community-driven organizations and projects. Organizations like Altadena Arts honor the legacy of celebrated African American artist Charles W. White by uplifting artists of color, women and people with disabilities. Through public artwork spaces and festivals, Altadena Arts makes sure that the arts can be a force for inclusion and connection.
The collaborative aspects of Altadena’s artistic legacy have flourished through the ALTA Art Tour, organized by the Alta Arts Collective. The most recent ALTA Art Tour, held in November 2024, featured 31 artists across eight host studios in Altadena. Visitors explored artists’ work spaces, witnessing their creative processes and connecting directly with the artists themselves. From paintings and sculptures to ceramics and mixed media, the annual experience brings artists together by highlighting the breadth and interconnection of their Altadena community.
One of the most iconic artistic spaces in Altadena’s history is Zorthian Ranch. Serving as a 45-acre haven for artists, intellectuals and creatives for over 70 years and established by Armenian American artist Jirayr Zorthian, the ranch became a hub for art, music and cultural gatherings. Zorthian, known for his murals and architectural creations made from salvaged materials, transformed the ranch into a living work of art. For over twenty years, Zorthian Ranch has served as a film set and hosted a summer camp.
Tragically, much of Zorthian Ranch was lost in the Eaton Fire, with the archives of Zorthian’s artwork and many of its iconic structures destroyed. However, the two main houses and the spirit of the ranch remain intact, as its stewards are dedicated to rebuilding and continuing its mission of inspiring and uniting the community.
Altadena’s artistic legacy is intertwined with its landscapes. The mountains, parks and streets have inspired those who live and create here. Yet no matter how beautiful they are, landscapes are subject to change. Art becomes a way of preserving what time alters, capturing the spirit of a place and the stories it holds.
Like Zorthian Ranch, many parts of Altadena’s identity have lost a lot of their physical presence, but their efforts to rebuild are already underway. Other relief efforts include the Grief and Hope Fund, which supports artists and art workers impacted by recent fires, and the Armory Fire Relief Fund, assisting teaching artists and staff who lost their homes. The ArtCenter Emergency Fund and the Huntington Disaster Relief Fund are also providing critical support to their communities. These initiatives aim to ensure that Altadena’s creative spirit endures and thrives despite devastating losses.
