On Saturday, Apr. 5, and Sunday, Apr. 6, the six Poly Upper School Moot Court teams participated in the prestigious New Haven Regional Tournament held at Yale University, marking the final in-person competition before the nationals, which are held virtually. Moot Court is an activity akin to Mock Trial, but students specifically debate Supreme Court cases. With more than 50 teams competing from across the nation, the tournament was fiercely competitive.
The Poly team achieved various accolades, with senior Charlotte McDonald and junior Filiz Fish advancing to the quarterfinals, and juniors Lennon Standridge and Iris Grether making it to the semifinals. In addition to the team’s success, several individuals received recognition for their exceptional performances. Notably, junior Ginny Cheung secured 6th place speaker, sophomore Alexandra Tan placed 8th, and Grether earned 9th.
Reflecting on the experience, Tan shared, “I enjoyed meeting students from other schools because I find it so interesting to learn about their own backgrounds, and I think that Moot Court gives a really good opportunity to meet all kinds of students from around the nation.”
Moot Court Coach and Upper School History Teacher Norman Frazier praised the team’s camaraderie: “Everyone really does encourage one another throughout the entire tournament, and the sportsmanship in Moot Court is really admirable.”
At Moot Court nationals on April 26th and 27th, Poly was ranked the 7th best program. Fish was awarded 16th speaker, junior Amelie Salette ranked 18th, and a team composed of Salette and junior Allison Zhang ranked 17th nationally.
