Poly’s Boswell Gallery buzzed with excitement on Friday, Feb. 28, as faculty, students and visitors gathered for the unveiling of Re-Present, an exhibition by this year’s visiting artist, Dylan Townley-Smith. The show highlighted some of Townley-Smith’s recent artwork, including several never-before seen paintings.
Townley-Smith, who holds an MFA from Pasadena’s ArtCenter College of Design, aims to challenge conventional perceptions of painting by using the medium as a tool to explore art beyond its technical aspects.
Each year, Poly’s Visual Arts Department selects a visiting artist whose work aligns with the department’s focus. As this year’s artist, Townley-Smith will engage with the Poly community through solo exhibitions and meetings with art classes throughout the year. His work has already left an impression.
“As someone interested in STEM, I never paid much attention to visual art as a whole,” said freshman Kalea Plotnick, “This exhibition really opened my eyes to all that visual arts have to offer, and I thought Townley-Smith’s paintings were great.”
The exhibition will remain open to the Poly community until Apr. 11.
