In response to the recent fires devastating LA County, the Poly Library Leadership Council (LLC), a group of 9th-12th graders, launched a book drive to support Poly community members impacted by the crisis. Since the initiative began three weeks ago, the council has successfully collected over 100 books, now available in the library’s first alcove bookcase. Donations can still be dropped off in the white bin near the library entrance.
LLC member and freshman Sylvie Shapiro emphasized the importance of providing books: “Since they aren’t always considered a necessity, they are not always valued as much.” Even though they aren’t essential, it is important for impacted students to have access to books as they continue reconstructing their lives.
“The goal was to help as many victims of the fire as possible, and I think that creating a source of happiness for students gave the inspiration for the drive,” shared sophomore LLC member William Son. “Books are comforting and can help people impacted by the fires return to normal,” added Upper School Librarian Nora Murphy.
Whether replacing familiar favorites or discovering new stories, the LLC hopes these books will bring both solace and hope during a challenging time for the Poly community.
