You can learn a lot about someone from what’s on their lunch menu. Some people provide for all of their friends. Some people eat everyone else’s just to get through to 3:10 p.m. And some put their faith and their lunch in the hands of the Poly cafeteria.
Freshman Naomi Kim falls into the first category. People who pack their lunch from home are usually “Type A,” the kind of person who organizes their room constantly, uses homework folders and somehow manages to get nine hours of sleep every night. Some may wonder why one would wake up early to pack lunch. As Kim explained, “I get a healthy/nutritious lunch for free, and I also get to make my friends happy when they’re hungry.”
To get the other side of this story, I interviewed junior Caralee Wang, an Epicurean regular. She says, “I hate carrying lunch from home. It’s just too many bags.”
She also remarked that she enjoys her rest too much to wake up any earlier to pack her food. If you’re someone who always gets school lunch, you probably enjoy surprises, don’t use your locker enough and are constantly sleep-deprived.
Then, there are the people who don’t pack lunch or buy lunch from the cafeteria. They survive on maybe an Alani and some gum, or perhaps some Cinnamon Toast Crunch and pretzels from Haaga. Falling into this category means you probably check your phone in secret during the day, fall asleep during free periods and have a hidden stash of Needohs in a locker or at the bottom of your backpack.
Whether you’re a generous friend who gets up early to make lunch for the entire friend group, or if you’re a sleep-deprived gambler rolling the dice with the cafeteria, your school lunch says a lot about you. So, if you want to pack a big tupperware of leftovers or try a new KBBQ bowl, go for it. Just know that it defines your personality.
