After a dominant 16-2 victory over EF Academy on Tuesday, Apr. 15, the Polytechnic School boys’ tennis team is proving they’re here to compete. The Panthers are on the rise, led by a mix of experienced seniors and up-and-coming underclassmen. With strong chemistry and a relentless work ethic, the squad is quickly becoming one of the most feared teams in the Prep League.
Under the mentorship of new Head Coach Olivier Harménil and Coach Manuel Davila, this team has experienced steady growth throughout the season. While facing some early losses, they have managed to pull it together and make CIF. This progression is particularly impressive, given that this is Harménil’s first season with the team and the tennis pre-season was cut short due to the Altadena fires. Additionally, Davila brings fresh energy and a lighter side to the team, helping Harménil and ensuring the team is well-rounded and ready for their matches.
Senior captain Daniel Zheng has had a dominant season, winning most of his matches at Singles 1 and making numerous contributions to the team. Freshman Ambrosio Rodriguez said, “Daniel’s [contribution] is displayed through his skilled and experienced playing style.” Meanwhile, freshmen Rodriguez, Jerry Shi and Roen Singla have made names for themselves, starting most varsity games at doubles 1 and 2 and occasionally playing singles. With Poly having depth and skilled underclassmen in its lineup, it is undoubtedly prepared for seasons to come.
Another key element behind the team’s success is team chemistry. The junior varsity and varsity teams are of mixed ages, creating connections across grades and friendships that boost spirit. Additionally, the fact that players move between teams helps make the program more fluid and collaborative. Another way that Harménil helps improve team chemistry is by having the team play practice matches against each other. The team loves this, and it’s a good practice that makes them extra prepared for when they play together, allowing them to learn each other’s playing styles and strategies. Coach Harmenil states, “I see a lot of students who want to get better and for me that is very important. Younger students have improved.” Support from the community had been a significant factor in the team’s success, with many classmates and parents attending to show their support.
The Panthers have faced numerous challenges this season, tying Chadwick in a nail-biting match on Thursday, Mar. 20, and narrowly losing to Prep 12-6 in multiple thrilling matches on Thursday, Apr. 10. Although demoralizing, these defeats were partly due to back-to-back away games, injuries, and the unavailability of players, and don’t reflect the team’s potential. Luckily, JV players such as freshmen Emmett Joanou and Adian Shih have been able to step in and help the team out when needed.
The Panthers had a fair season, finishing strong with victories over Providence and EF Academy. Their confidence and wins give them hope heading into CIF.
