Jennifer Godwin-Minto
Every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, National Hispanic (Latine) Heritage Month celebrates the diverse contributions of Hispanic Americans to United States culture and innovation. The Paw Print is featuring contributions from Poly’s Latines Unides and Las Monarcas affinity groups as well as photos from the Latinx Heritage Month assembly on Oct. 17 that featured food, music and cultural activities.

my grandmother’s ring is a promise.
a promise between her and my grandfather to love each other until death does them part.

my grandmother’s ring is a treasure.
a jewel that has more value than anything else in the world.

my grandmother’s ring was a joke.

my dear grandma’s brothers dying of laughter when my grandpa asked her mother for permission.

my grandmother’s ring is a tradition.

“señora, I love your daughter, and I want to marry her more than anything.”

my grandmother’s ring is a gift.

my grandmother and I crying tears of happiness when my grandparents sat me down and put it in my hands.

my grandmother’s ring is a responsibility.

now that I’m a woman, I need to take care of it as if it were my ring.

my grandmother’s ring is mine now.

a promise,

a treasure,

a joke,

a tradition,

a gift,

and a responsibility

that I guard on my finger.

nuestro anillo.

now it’s not just my grandmother’s ring.

now it’s mine AND my grandmother’s ring.

our ring.

our ring is a symbol of the love that my grandparents have,

but is also a symbol of the love that my family has.

y un día, con este anillo,
me voy a casar (espero yo.)

and one day, with this ring,

I will get married (I hope.)

y un día, con este anillo,
voy a darle esa misma
ese mismo tesoro,
ese mismo chiste,
esa misma tradición,
ese mismo regalo,
y esa misma responsabilidad

and one day, with this ring,

I will give that same

that same treasure,

that same joke,

that same tradition,

that same gift,

and that same responsibility

that my grandmother had,

that I have,

and that all of the oldest girls will have forever.

please, God,

make it so our ring isn’t a joke anymore.
