Upper School students trickled onto McWilliams Courtyard during lunch on Friday, Sept. 20, eager to observe the first Fifth Quarter of the year. Hosted by the Poly Arts Student Council (PASC), Fifth Quarters allow student artists to demonstrate and share their talents with the greater Poly community. Attendees of this beach-themed Fifth Quarter viewed and listened to a variety of student work, ranging from photography and visual art to singing and instrumental music.
“It gives student artists of all kinds a chance to perform for the whole school in a more casual setting without having to be in a class,” stated Upper School Performing Arts teacher and PASC advisor Eric Lifland. A main highlight of Fifth Quarter is its inclusive and supportive setting. The casual air of the lunchtime showcase allowed student performers to feel at ease while displaying their talents, surrounded and cheered on by their peers.
“I had a lot of fun, not just performing, but also getting to appreciate the work of all the other students who showcased their art,” shared sophomore Alexandra Tan, who sang and played guitar to “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae at the event.
Freshman Caroline Perez-Fraga shared her sketches inspired by the movie “Coraline,” and sophomore Kara Kang displayed her recreation of “The Potato Eaters” by Vincent Van Gogh.
Along with the performances, student attendees were able to get their faces painted as well.
Overall, the event’s art and performances were well received as the audience cheered and applaused throughout the lunch period.
