Poly’s varsity boys soccer team has proven to be a formidable force on the field with an impressive 10-2-1 record so far this season. Their recent performances have been nothing short of outstanding, securing wins against daunting opponents Providence, Chadwick and Flintridge Prep with scores of 9-1, 2-0 and 4-2, respectively.
Senior midfielder Parker Gooden commented, “It’s been a great year. Our young players have stepped up and been valuable contributors, and our older players have been great leaders. I can’t wait to see what the rest of our season has in store.”
The mix of experienced leadership and emerging talent has been a key factor in the team’s success. Additionally, defense has been a standout aspect of Poly’s game, with a focus on physicality that makes it challenging for opposing teams to move into scoring positions.
Senior Sanjay Robles stated, “We have been very physical on defense and made teams struggle moving the ball near our goal. Our stout defense has been very important to our team’s success.”
The team’s defensive front is led by three experienced seniors: Robles, Jared Gray and James Onderdonk. These three have undoubtedly set the tone for the entire team. Poly’s defense has allowed only 9 goals in 15 games, a feat that has allowed the team to nullify most opposing offenses.
On the offensive side of the ball, Poly’s dynamic attack is led by senior Jesse Benitez and Gooden. Additionally, freshman Momo Tonthat has become an offensive force, one of the team’s talented young players who promise a bright future for Poly soccer.
Head coach Dan Sheridan said, “The freshmen have really grown this year and two of them, Ethan Greenberg and Momo Tonthat, have been starters all year. The seniors have done an excellent job incorporating the younger players into the team while creating a strong, cohesive unit.”
These players have not only showcased their scoring abilities but have also been valuable contributors by racking up assists.
The synergy between the offensive and defensive units has created a well-balanced team that excels on both ends of the pitch. The success of Poly’s soccer team goes beyond the numbers on the scoreboard; it is a testament to the hard work, dedication and teamwork exhibited by each player.
With a blend of experienced players and rising stars, the boys team is poised to make an impact in the Prep League and, hopefully, the CIF playoffs.
