The girls Varsity soccer team will not settle for defeat this year. With a squad of talented players from all grades, the Panthers do not lack skill or experience. Their goals this year are clear: win Prep League, showcase a strong performance in CIF and develop the soccer program at Poly.
While the team started preseason training with high focus, they suffered a stinging 6-2 defeat in a scrimmage against La Cañada High School on Friday, Nov. 15. However, despite this challenging loss, the team still remains motivated and ready to overcome obstacles.
Junior Mariana Gomez, who recently got called up to the U.S. Under-19 Women’s Youth National Soccer Team, believes that Poly’s tough loss will actually benefit the team in the long run: “It was a great opportunity for the freshmen and people who are new to the team to get to play together, connect with new teammates and learn their style of play.”
The team is led by coaches Heidi Strauss, Jamie Bell and Amber Bocquin.
Head Coach Strauss stated, “My hope for the soccer team is that we continue to grow and build on our strengths, both individually and as a group. I want to see the players work well together, develop strong chemistry and play with confidence on the field.”
Strauss and the team look to have intense and enjoyable practices in order for the players to benefit and win games. The team has some areas for improvement if they want to reach their goals this season.
“We need to work on keeping the ball more and staying more composed under pressure. If we can master these skills, then I am sure that we will go far this season and have a good chance in CIF,” said sophomore Mia Goonetilleke.
Strauss noted that while individual talent is crucial for the team, having good chemistry is what really brings success. She also believes that players need to find joy while playing and competing.
“The joy could be in the small victories, like a perfectly timed pass, or in the bigger ones, like winning a championship or scoring a goal, or simply making a team,” explained Strauss.
If the team focuses on the small details during practice, exhibits good chemistry and continues to persevere, then they will surely find success this season, reaching goals on and off the field.
