The sun shines down on the field, leaving a yellow hue on the grass. It’s Saturday morning; perfect for football. Taking the field, the offense quickly huddles up, recites the playcall, and gets into formation. Suddenly, the ball is snapped, and the quarterback takes a three-step dropback, scanning the defense for an open receiver. Meanwhile, senior Connor Mallinger has beaten his coverage downfield and raises his hand to draw the quarterback’s attention. A lob pass is thrown his way, and he catches the ball in stride, marching into the end zone. The scoreboard buzzes, displaying six more points for Polytechnic.
Mallinger has been having a fantastic senior season for the Poly varsity football team, especially in the team’s Sep. 27 home victory against New Design Watts, where they dominated the Knights 51-0. In this game, Mallinger scored 4 TDs, an invaluable contribution to the team.
When speaking on Mallinger’s impact, Head Coach Scott Bello stated, “Connor contributes by making big plays in every aspect of the game, scoring touchdowns on offense, creating turnovers and stops on defense, and flipping the field or breaking runs on special teams.” As a versatile player, he excels in all aspects of the game as his athleticism transcends beyond a singular talent.
In addition, Mallinger maintains a diligent work ethic on and off the field. “Connor shows up to practice every day to become 1% better. He is a hard worker who always gives it his all no matter what,” added sophomore Clive Chao.
Now, as a senior, Mallinger has taken on more responsibility, serving as a guiding voice for underclassmen.”Connor is a leader by example. He competes with intensity but always puts the team first. Younger players look up to him because he shows them how to prepare, how to push through challenges and how to play the game the right way,” added Bello.
With his years of experience in football, Mallinger has naturally stepped into the role of a mentor. He consistently leads by example, demonstrating to younger teammates how to carry themselves on and off the field. Whether remaining disciplined during practice or maintaining a positive attitude in tough moments, he establishes the standard for what it means to be a committed athlete. Underclassmen look up to him not only for his athletic performance, but also for the energy and focus he embraces everyday.
Mallinger has played football for all four years of high school. Through different rosters, coaches and playbooks, Mallinger has made sure to give it his all no matter what. Regardless of his yards, receptions and tackles, his true value comes in his dedication to his craft. Mallinger will certainly be missed after he graduates.
