Since stepping on the field for the first time in sixth grade, football has been an integral aspect of freshman Alister Chan’s life. After recently making the switch from receiver to quarterback, Chan has had no issue adjusting to his new role as he conquers the football field this season. Maneuvering through both the physical and mental game with ease, his drive to win fuels his persistence in every game.
Although adapting to the new setting of high school football, his speed both in passing the football and understanding the vital role of being a quarterback are evident beyond his years.
“Even though he’s a freshman, Alister has grown this season both as a quarterback and as a leader,” stated senior team captain Charlie Broggi. “He mans the pocket with ease and is able to successfully execute plays every game, showing that he deserves to be the starting QB.”
The team currently holds an overall record of 3-5, ranking them 5th in their league. With a determination unfazed by these outcomes, regardless of win or loss, Chan gives his full presence at each match, playing in the moment and constantly striving to be better.
“Being a quarterback is not easy; you have to be really smart and make split decisions in a second, but he takes the time to study his position and learn the game,” commented Head Coach Ken Henderson.
Often regarded as the heartbeat of the team, the quarterback leads the offense with their ability to quickly predict shifts in the opposing team’s defense and execute passes with precision. This pivotal position symbolizes dedication and resilience, a role Chan embraces within the spirit of the sport.
“He has the ball in his hands ninety-nine percent of the time, and he has to make quick decisions, and he has to know what everybody’s doing on the field, and he has to try and guess what the defense is doing as well, so that by default makes him important,” said Henderson.
Since football is a team sport, a collective spirit is essential to success. Chan amplifies the team’s camaraderie, helping to unify the players.
The team’s infectious enthusiasm consistently drives Chan back onto the field time and time again.
“I like the team aspect and how you need everyone on your team to do their job or else the play will go bad. I like how I have to have teamwork with my teammates so that we do well,” said Chan.
Despite the team’s fourth consecutive loss of the season against Temple City on Oct. 19, the next two matches to come carry the nail-biting possibility of making the playoffs. While Chan continues to practice with the hope of making playoffs this season, he hopes to improve each year in high school so that he can take his talents to college. Without a doubt, Chan has showcased his talent throughout the season, but his success is truly the product of his discipline that will surely serve him well in the seasons to come.
