In Scott Gym, where you hear the squeaks of shoes on the floor, the girls basketball team has found both success and downfall this season. With a league record of 5-3, the team looks to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Starting off league play with a powerful statement, the Panthers took home a 56-37 win on Dec. 12 over Westridge School. Following their first league win, the team finished 2-2 in the Santa Clara Winter Classic from Dec. 26 to 29 with decisive wins over Santa Clara and Foothill Technology. Looking to keep their momentum going, Poly secured another league win with a very convincing 28-point victory over Mayfield Senior School. The team then played their toughest matchups yet: Rio Hondo, Providence and cross-town rivals Flintridge Prep. After suffering three heartbreaking defeats, the team bounced back well with a road victory against Westridge on Jan. 18 and a home victory against Chadwick. on Jan. 19.
Led by sophomore Chloe Jeng, who plays both shooting and point guard, the girls basketball team is showcasing a level of play that reflects their dedication to the sport.
Jeng said, “For the past season, we have become close like a family and take care of each other when we need help. Overall, I think the team has grown and faced many challenges, but at the end of the day, we became stronger together.”
The camaraderie within the squad serves as a cornerstone for their success, creating a dynamic that extends beyond the scoreboard. This year’s team is not merely a collection of players; they are a cohesive unit working in unison to achieve their goals. As most of the team are returners, their bond has only grown stronger.
Under strong leadership and coaching by Kianna Flannagan, who was promoted from assistant to head coach this year, the Panthers are looking to make a playoff run. Flannagan’s experience and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the team’s strategies and fostering an environment conducive to growth. Flannagan has been helping players not only refine their individual skills but also learnthe importance of teamwork and perseverance.
“Our strong team chemistry has played a big role in our improvement throughout the season and I know it will continue to fuel our push to the playoffs,” said senior shooting guard Kamryn Chan.
The bond this team has created off the court is incredibly strong. Yet, the team remains cognizant of the need to improve communication on the court. The players aim to synchronize their movements and strategies seamlessly like a well-orchestrated dance. The Panthers also recognize the potential for even greater success if the communication on the court mirrors the harmony they’ve cultivated off the court.
In the final stretch of league games – three tough road battles against Chadwick, Rio Hondo Prep and Flintridge Prep and one crucial home game against Providence – the Panthers aim to culminate the season on a high note.
