Every successful volleyball team has a player who brings the energy to every point and has a competitive drive that pushes everyone around her. For the Poly girls varsity volleyball team, that player is freshman Hannah Arietta. Whether she’s blocking hits at the net or encouraging her teammates with her infectious positivity, Arietta has become one of the team’s most reliable presences on and off the court.
Arietta’s journey to the sport began unexpectedly. The summer before she entered fifth grade, her mom signed her up for a volleyball camp, which Arietta protested against. What started as something she was forced into, however, quickly developed into a passion. Arietta reflected, “I loved the overall dynamic of the sport. I loved hitting, passing, serving, all of it.”
Since that first camp in 2021, volleyball has become a defining part of her life. Today, she competes on Poly’s girls varsity volleyball team and for San Gabriel Elite Volleyball Club, where she continues to refine her skills.
For Poly, Arietta normally plays as a middle blocker, a role that requires quick reactions, strong net presence, and the ability to anticipate opposing hitters. At SG Elite, she expands her versatility by playing as an outside hitter and an opposite hitter, showcasing her all-around capabilities. Her willingness to adjust and adapt to each team’s needs makes her a valuable asset and reliable teammate
Arietta’s impact goes beyond the court. Known for her kindness and energy, she often boosts her teammates’ spirits and helps create a positive mood. Junior outside hitter Sona Martin said, “Hannah is a very supportive and dedicated teammate. Her hard work contributed to our success this season; she was always there to encourage and support us with her high spirits.” That steady encouragement makes her a player who not only competes but also lifts up those around her.
Looking back on the season that unfortunately ended in the second round of CIF Division III playoffs against Saugus, Arietta described it as full of growth, excitement, and connection. “From the first ever summer practice, to winning our away game at Mayfield, to losing against Saugus in the second round, I really did love all of it… except for maybe conditioning,” she shared. Arietta credits the season filled with joy to her teammates, saying, “My teammates are very energetic and uplifting, and I always felt like I was supported on and off the court.”
Although Poly’s playoff run ended earlier than hoped, Arietta is proud of what the team accomplished throughout the season. “I know that we always played our hearts out, especially in our last game, which went to five sets.” The Panthers may not have made it as far as they had expected, but their effort and resilience were clear, building a strong foundation for next year’s season.
Although the team will be saying goodbye to their two senior captains, Arietta is looking forward to maintaining the momentum they established this year. With the loss of the team’s senior leaders, the Panthers face an uncertain future, but her goal is clear. Arietta hopes to win the Prep League again next year.
